Alice M. Lownes, 79, of Harleysville Pa., died Thursday in Harleysville.

She was a retired Certified Life Underwriter, employed by Provident Mutual Life Insurance Co., where she was also the editor and photographer of their company magazine, "Between Ourselves," and also received numerous awards for her service to the company.

Ms. Lownes was born in Philadelphia to the late Milton Markley Lownes Sr. and the late Gladys Dunlap Lownes.

She was a former long-time resident of Roxborough and has been a resident of the Peter Becker Community in Harleysville for the past 13 years. She graduated from Roxborough High School in 1946, where she was very active in theatrical shows and continued acting with the Abbey Playhouse in Wissahickon. She was a former member of the Roxborough Presbyterian Church and attended Saint Peter's Lutheran Church in Lafayette Hill. She was a member of their community elders and a supporter of their annual Boars Head Festival. She was also a member of the Whitemarsh Lioness Club, The Phillipians, The Saturday Niters Dancing Club, the Palestine Chapter No. 50 Order of the Eastern Star, and was a past Worthy Matron. She volunteered for many years with the American Cancer Society as a driver and at the Peter Becker Community Gift Shop. Ms. Lownes was known for her great sense of humor and generosity of time and service to others along with traveling with her friends and family in search of the next great meal -- a trait that had been instilled in the Lownes family for many generations.

Ms. Lownes was preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, the late Dr. Milton M. and Bernie Lownes Jr. She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Richard D. and Nancy Lownes Sr. of Harlesyville ; and nieces and nephews -- grand and great.
