Peter Daniel McDonnell Sr., 56, of Walnut Creek Village, died suddenly Thursday at his home.

Pete was born in South Hadley, Mass., to the late George Hunter McDonnell and Margaret Bain McDonnell. He was a professional engineer with Contractors and Engineers Services, Inc. in Goldsboro. Pete received an Associate's Degree from Wentworth Institute and a Bachelor's Degree in Science from the School of Engineering -- Heavy Construction Option at Arizona State University. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. Pete had a great love for children and had volunteered many hours with the Boy Scouts of America and the Wayne County Boys and Girls Club.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Rev. Thurman Horney and the Rev. Jerry Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow in the Grady Family Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Sherry Grady McDonnell; his children, Melissa McDonnell Hoffman and husband, Timothy Scott Hoffman, of Charlotte, Peter Daniel McDonnell Jr. of Goldsboro and Grady Howard McDonnell and his girlfriend, Ciara Nicole Macanas, of Goldsboro; his granddaughter, Katherine Taylor Stafford; and his brothers, George Alexander McDonnell of Cape Coral, Fla., and Andrew Francis McDonnell of Naugatuck, Conn.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Barbara Ruth McDonnell and Margaret Mary McDonnell; and his brothers, John James McDonnell and Michael Thomas McDonnell.

Memorials may be made to the Wayne County Boys and Girls Club, P.O. Box 774, Goldsboro, N.C. 27533 or to Boy Scouts of America Troop 3 at First Presbyterian Church, Attn: Jimmy Goss, 1101 E. Ash St., Goldsboro, N.C. 27534.

The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at his home, 802 Mill Road, Goldsboro.
