MARCELLUS JAMES BEST II

Marcellus James Best II, 94, died Saturday at his home. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Janet Sanborn Best.

Mr. Best was born in Goldsboro to the late William Hinton Best and Eleanor Munroe Best. Mr. Best spent his life working in the family businesses including W. H. Best and Sons Inc., Best Distributing Co. and Best Commercial Development, LLC. He graduated from Goldsboro High School in 1929 and attended Riverside Military Academy in 1930. He graduated in 1934 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with a bachelor's degree in commerce. He served on the boards of Kirkwood Retirement Community, United Church Ministries and the Salvation Army. He was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served in many capacities over the years including Ruling Elder and, most recently, Elder Emeritus.

A memorial service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, with the Revs. Drew Clark and Ryan Rasmussen officiating. The family will greet friends at the church following the service and at other times in their homes in Goldsboro. Private interment will be in the church columbarium.

Mr. Best is survived by his sons, Jay Best and wife, Kathy, of Goldsboro; and Frank Best and wife, Missy, of Goldsboro; and his grandchildren, Marc Best, Lewis Best, Emily Best, Samuel Best, Virginia Best, Sarah Best and Frank Best Jr. He is also survived by his sister, McArn Best of Goldsboro, and his sister-in-law, Sally Riddle of Morganton.
