JESSE J. RHODES

Dec. 30, 1922 - April 4, 2007

Jesse James Rhodes, 84, died Wednesday at his home on Head Street. Born in Johnston County, he was a son of the late Charlie Rufus and Smithie Guin Rhodes. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Flonnie Bell Rhodes and Lilly Mae Sutton and three brothers, Billy Rufus Rhodes, John Lewis "J.L." Rhodes and Bobby Lou Rhodes.

He was a member of the Church of Faith in Selma. A U.S. Army veteran of WWII, he was a member of Smithfield Chapter 44 of the D.A.V.

Funeral services will be 6 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home, Selma, with the Rev. Tommy Pearce officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the Selma Memorial Gardens.

Surviving are his wife, Clara Mitchell Rhodes; sons, Jerry J., Jesse E. and Donnie Rhodes, all of Micro; daughter, Frances LaRue Cox of Smithfield; brother, Ira Rhodes of Goldsboro; sisters, Mary Overbee of Goldsboro, Smithie Tobin of Wallace, Susie Brock of Brogden, Emma Jean Simpson of Henderson and Bert Pearson of Fayetteville; 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 11 South Boylan Ave, Suite 221, Raleigh, N.C. 27603.
