WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- William Marvin Elkins, 72, passed away on March 6, 2007, after a long battle with cancer, surrounded by family and friends.

When he returned from service in the Army, Marvin met and married Ruth Herring. The couple made their home in Asheville, N.C. He was employed by American Enka, which later became a part of BASF Corporation. He was transferred to Williamsburg, Va. in 1985. Marvin was an avid golfer and volunteered for the Anheuser Busch Michelob PGA tournament each year.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, Ervin and Inez Elkins. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Ruth; his son, Scott Elkins, of Cary, N.C.; two daughters, Tracy Smith and husband, Keith, of Greensboro, N.C., and Cynthia Stevens and husband, Mike, of Williamsburg; four grandchildren, Zachary, Sean, Kenny and Aubrie; and one sister, Millicent Hodge, of Charlotte, N.C.

A celebration of his life will be held at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 9, 2007, with the Rev. Brandon Barrett officiating. Family and friends are invited to the service and visitation following.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to one of the following: Hospice Support Care, 4445 Powhatan Parkway, Williamsburg, Va., 23188, Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1677 Jamestown Road, Williamsburg, Va. 23185, or American Cancer Society, 11835 Cannon Blvd., Suite A-102, Newport News, Va. 23606.

The family would like to give their thanks to Dr. Laura Kerbin, Brenda, and the staff at Virginia Oncology Associates for the loving care Marvin was given.
