Mark Edwards Road will reopen at 5 p.m. today and remain open to traffic throughout the weekend. N.C. Department of Transportation crews plan to close the bridge again on Monday to wrap up maintenance work. The bridge should be closed for only one day.
The NCDOT closed a stretch of Mark Edwards Road in Wayne County Wednesday to make emergency bridge repairs.
NCDOT maintenance crews will repair parts of the substructure that have deteriorated on the bridge over West Bear Creek, near Parkstown Road.
The bridge, which carries truck traffic, was built in 1950 and partially reconstructed 22 years later. Although the substructure is made of wood, the deck that vehicles cross is concrete.
