Athletes compete, win at Special Olympics Summer Games

Special Olympics Wayne County track and field athletes were among the local athletes to participate in the Summer Games. From left are Martrice Carr, Chase Hare, coach Wade Johnson, Joshua Lewis and Xavier Beamon.

Special Olympics Wayne County had numerous winners in the Summer Games, held recently in Raleigh.

The local athletes competed in softball skills, track and field, bowling, cycling and swimming, said D'Leeshia Lee, local coordinator.

The following is a list of winners in the various categories.

Softball skills: Cherie Workey, gold medal; Rhonda Barwick and Ryan Hood, silver medals; and Miguell Sheffield, bronze medal.

Track and field: Xavier Beamon, sixth place ribbon for 100 meter dash and bronze medal for 200 meter dash; Matrice Carr, fifth place ribbon for mini javelin and bronze medals for 100 meter dash and 200 meter dash; Chase Hare, gold medal for mini javelin, fifth place ribbon for 100 meter dash and silver medal for 200 meter dash; Joshua Lewis, fourth place ribbons for 100 meter dash and 200 meter dash; Raven Taracena, gold medals for softball throw and 50 meter walk; and Wayne Red made up of Beamon, Carr, Hare and Lewis, fifth place ribbon for the 400 meter relay.

Bowling: Five Amigos, made up of Justin Barnes, Felipe Capps, Jo Ann Crawford, Tyler Edmundson and Matthew McCoy, fourth place ribbon for Unified Team; Beauty and the Beast, which included Emily Crawford and Alan Jenkins, fourth place ribbon for Unified Doubles; Wayne Belles, Melissa Stanford and Erica Walderman, silver medal for Bowling Doubles; Chili Peppers, or Johnathan Delano and Emani McDuffie, bronze medal for Unified Doubles; Wayne Trouble Makers, or Charles Nail and Tanisha Lofton, silver medal for Unified Doubles; John Ragan, fourth place ribbon for Bowling Singles; and bronze medal for Unified Team went to Brian Gilbert, Heather Pardue, Shannon Moore and Kadarius Lewis.

Swimming: Jesse Martinez, gold medals for 50 yard butterfly and 50 yard freestyle and fourth place ribbon for 50 yard backstroke.

Cycling: Kevin Langston received a gold medal for 5K time trial and silver medal for 5K road race.
