N.C. Highway Patrol troopers investigate the scene of a fatal wreck in Lenoir County, near the Wayne County line, involving three cars.

The N.C. Highway Patrol is investigating a three-car wreck on U.S. 70 that left one person dead and three more injured Wednesday.

The wreck occurred around 1 p.m. Wednesday, at Exit 370, where the U.S. 70 Bypass begins just inside Lenoir County.

Sgt. Scott Hemby, with the N.C. Highway Patrol, said that a Mazda 626 was traveling westbound on U.S. 70 when the driver slowed down, and was hit near the back passenger door by a Honda Odyssey. A Chevrolet S-10 then hit the van, and all three cars came to a rest in the westbound lanes of the U.S. 70 Bypass.

It was not clear why the driver of the Mazda slowed down on the road.

A person sitting in the back passenger seat of the Mazda was pronounced dead on the scene. Three other people were taken to hospitals to be treated for their injuries -- one to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, one to Wayne UNC Health Care and one to UNC Lenoir Health Care in Kinston.

The names of the people involved in the wreck have not yet been released.
