A stretch of Mark Edwards Road has been closed in order to make emergency bridge repairs.

N.C. Department of Transportation maintenance crews will repair parts of the substructure that have deteriorated on the bridge over West Bear Creek, near Parkstown Road.

The bridge, which carries truck traffic, was built in 1950 and partially reconstructed 22 years later.

Although the substructure is made of wood, the deck that vehicles cross is concrete.

The bridge may reopen as early as Saturday, but possibly as late as Monday, June 18.

In the meantime, drivers should use New Hope Road, U.S. 13 and the U.S. 70 Bypass as the detour.
