The Goldsboro alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. held its recent May Week luncheon at the Maxwell Center, recognizing several for their accomplishments. The purpose of May Week is to emphasize the importance of higher education, especially for black women; acknowledge academic and professional achievements; and highlight community involvement during the year. Recognized for their community service were Tovares Oates, football coach at Eastern Wayne High school, and John Barnes, CEO of Rebuilding Broken Places, and members celebrating their silver anniversary. Pictured are the Golden Delta Dears, members 62 or older with 50 or more years of membership in the sorority, front row from left, Helen Johnston and Hattie Hughes; back row, Bettye Lewis, Beatrice Whitaker and O'Nita Baker. Absent were Nora Edwards, Carlinda Jones and Faye Jones.
