Tony Blair, social studies teacher at Wayne School of Engineering, was recognized at the recent Board of Education meeting.

Wayne School of Engineering social studies teacher Tony Blair has been named the 2018 North Carolina Scholastic High School director of the year.

He was recently recognized during the annual meeting of the N.C. Association for Scholastic Activities.

Blair began the school year as a new scholastic director for NCASA, leading the middle and high school scholastic programs at his school. He was among 50 nominees statewide for the award.

In his nomination, NCASA credited Blair with taking on a shared leadership approach by including more teachers in the sponsorship of the programs and maintaining student involvement in NCASA competitions. Under his leadership, Wayne School of Engineering became the first school in the history of NCASA to finish in the top three of both the NCASA Challenge Cup and NCASA Scholastic Cup standings. The two programs are point-based, with students earning points through a myriad of academic and subject area focused activities conducted at the regional and state levels.

"It is rewarding to see an educator receive state recognition for (his) efforts to engage and challenge students in academic and extracurricular activities," said Dr. Michael Dunsmore, superintendent of Wayne County Public Schools. "We congratulate Mr. Blair for his achievement, and commend him for his efforts to support teaching and learning at his school through the North Carolina Scholastic program."

Blair, who started his education career with Wayne County Public Schools in 2008, has served as a teacher at WSE since 2014. He is certified in middle grades social studies, secondary grades social studies, middle grades science, and instructional technology specialist-computers and computer education.
