Pair of local students among 45 selected statewide for D.C. trip

Full SizeTwo local high school students are among 45 young leaders from across the state chosen to participate in a learning and leadership development opportunity this summer in the nation's capital.
Tri-County EMC will sponsor Kari Drake and Nathaly Audelo on the 2018 N.C. Youth Tour to Washington, D.C.
This year's tour will bring together more than 1,800 students from across the country to meet federally elected officials, participate in networking events and learn about the nation's history and the importance of civic engagement.
Drake, a junior at Rosewood High School, is the daughter of Kevin and Sissy Drake. She is a member of the Girl Scouts, volleyball and soccer teams at school and a member of the Eagle Ensemble.
Audelo, a junior at Wayne Early/Middle College High School, is the daughter of Juan and Maria Audelo. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa honors program and vice president of SAVVY.
Both students will represent Tri-County EMC on this year's June 9-15 tour.
"The Youth Tour experience cultivates awareness of our cooperative's mission and helps build leadership skills and an understanding that every person can make a difference," said Deidra Locklear, manager of communications and public relations at Tri-County. "We are committed to investing in our younger members who we know hold the keys to the future success of our communities."
The two local representatives along with other delegates from North Carolina will engage in discussions with both of the state's U.S. senators and several members of the U .S. House on Capitol Hill. The Young Tourists will also visit some of the capital's most notable areas, including historic memorials and museums.
Tri-County EMC has selected local youth to participate in the annual Youth Tour for 50 years. Nearly 50,000 students have participated in the program nationally since it began in 1964.
