NEW BERN -- Tom Ferrell of Mount Olive was appointed marshal for the Sudan Shriners, and George Raecher of Goldsboro was elected to a fifth term as the recorder on Jan. 27 during the organization's annual business meeting and election of officers in New Bern.

Ferrell was appointed by the newly elected Sudan Potentate, Illustrious Sir Teeny Jones. Marshal is a ceremonial term given to one of six appointed members of the board of directors.

Ferrell is a member of the Wayne Shrine Club and the Sudan Wrecking Crew.

He is the president/general manager of his family business, E.T. Ferrell & Son Plumbing & Heating Co. in Mount Olive, that was founded by his grandfather in 1935.

He is married to the former Ruth "Milly" Maxwell. They have three sons, Thomas, Sam and Jake, all of whom joined Sudan Shriners in 2017.

The term recorder is given to the noble who serves as the operations officer for the temple and is one of seven elected officers on the board of directors.

Raecher also was re-appointed as the director of public relations and the editor of the Sudan "Red Fez" magazine for the seventh year.

He is married to the former Janice Moore. They live in the Goldsboro area and have three married daughters and six grandchildren

Sudan concluded its 100th anniversary celebration on Jan. 26, and kicked off a second 100 years of dedication and work for the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Forty-six new nobles were taken into the fraternity. Sudan's membership is now at 4,192 with 37 Shrine clubs and 47 parades units scattered across its jurisdiction.

The event included the annual parade featuring Shrine parade units promoting Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Shrine Centers are located throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico, Germany, the Philippines and Brazil.

Sudan now has more than 550 patients receiving treatment at Shriners Hospitals for Children for pediatric care, burn injuries, lip and cleft palate and treatment for spinal injuries.

There are 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children located in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Over the years these hospitals have treated and cared for more than one million patients.

This medical care is provided regardless of the patients/parents ability to pay.
