The Arts Council of Wayne County will celebrate Black History Month with a variety of events.

Today will kick off the celebration with a reception at noon in the main gallery with an exhibit titled "African Americans in Times of War," curated by board member Peggie Howell. It will feature memoirs and artifacts from local families. It will run through Feb. 28 and is free.

The Arts Council will honor local community leaders Feb. 23 at 5 p.m., followed by a community drum circle from 6 to 7:30 p.m., led by drum master Joel Burks. The evening will end with a jazz concert by professional recording artist Rochelle Rice at 8 p.m. These events are free.

Feb. 24, there will be a food tasting and cultural learning stations in the main gallery from noon to 7 p.m., followed by a concert starring Africa Unplugged, a high-energy jazz energy jazz ensemble from the Durham area.

The Arts Council's Black History Month events are supported by PNC Bank, the North Carolina Arts Council, R.A. Bryan Foundation and Love Inc.
