Two Charles B. Aycock seniors earn prestigious Girl Scouts award

Two Girl Scouts from Goldsboro earned the Girl Scout Gold Award.
The North Carolina Coastal Pines congratulates Emily Thorne and Leah Campbell, of Goldsboro, for earning the Girl Scout Gold Award, which is the highest and most prestigious achievement in Girl Scouting.
Awarded to fewer than 6 percent of Girl Scouts annually, Thorne and Campbell join generations of young women who have earned the award while making a difference in their communities both locally and globally.
For Thorne's Gold Award project -- STEM Camp -- she addressed the lack of engineering and science classes in her local community.
To combat this, she started a STEM camp at her local YMCA, giving elementary, middle and high schoolers access to basic science and engineering classes. Campers were exposed to hands-on and problem solving activities in engineering. The project will be sustained as an annual camp at the YMCA.
Thorne is the daughter of Steven and Angie Thorne and is a senior at Charles B. Aycock High School. Thorne has been in Girl Scouts since 2007 and is in Girl Scout Troop No. 3564.
For Campbell's Gold Award project -- Little Free Flower Library -- she sought to increase brain stimulation among elders with Alzheimer's and dementia. To do so, she constructed a Little Free Library at the Countryside Assisted Living facility in Pikeville.
She collected books for the library and held a social at the facility at which she had the residents create bookmarks for them.
Campbell also organized a reading program at her high school where students read to residents and ask reading comprehension questions. She hopes that the library inspires members of the community to volunteer at the facility by reading the books with residents, therefore engaging with them socially and completing activities with them that stimulate their brains.
Campbell is the daughter of Shay and Coletta Campbell and is a senior at Charles B. Aycock High School. She has been in Girl Scouts since 2006 and is in Girl Scout Troop No. 3564.
In addition to Girl Scouting, she is active in her school's Varsity Women's Golf, Swim, and Softball teams. Campbell is an active member of Charles B. Aycock DECA and is a N.C. DECA state officer. She is also a Wayne County Teen Court volunteer.
