Wayne Country Day School cannot be stopped by a little wintry precipitation!
We didn't let the cold temperatures cool our engines this week as we welcomed many guests and experienced new and exciting things every day. We began our week on Tuesday, and the halls were filled with excited chatter about the long weekend, winter break, and most importantly, the snow that was said to be headed our way! We had the pleasure of sleeping in a little later on Thursday, thanks to a two-hour delay, but school was right back to normal when we got back.
On Thursday, we welcomed a Russian folk dance group, and the entire upper school had the opportunity to watch them perform. The assembly featured a young man and woman who took turns doing traditional dances from different regions of Russia and Ukraine, as well as Jewish dances. While they leaped around the room, a masterful guitar player strummed chords that made us all feel like we were in the heart of Moscow. Just when we were ready to give our final ovation, the dancers came out in new, colorful costumes and danced more. We also were taught how to say basic Russian words such as "hello," "goodbye," "thank you," "you're welcome" and more.
The fun didn't stop there; we welcomed another performing group on Friday. This time it was the Tennessee Shakespeare Company, a theatre group who combined classical rock and roll and blues music with Shakespeare's plays. They drew connections between Shakespeare's greatest plays and Memphis' greatest hits in ways we had never seen before, and we were all captivated as they took us from the streets of Memphis to Medieval Europe, and then back again. We thank all those who visited and introduced us to new customs and cultures this week, and we can't wait to see what else the second semester has in store for us.
