Two immigrants are facing charges after being accused of being in the United States -- Eastern North Carolina, specifically -- illegally.

Eliseo Hernandez-Lorenzo, 28, of Guatemala, is charged with misuse of a social security account number, false claim of United States citizenship with the intent to engage unlawfully in employment in the United States, aggravated identity theft and fraud and misuse of visas, permits and other documents.

Leopoldo Garcia-Altamirano, 56, of Mexico, is charged with unlawful and illegal alien in possession of a firearm.

Hernandez-Lorenzo was found in Duplin County, while Garcia-Altamirano was found in New Hanover County.

The charges against the two men were announced Wednesday in a press release from the United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina.

The charges came in the form of an indictment handed down by a federal grand jury in Raleigh.

At sentencing, Hernandez-Lorenzo could face a maximum of 49 years in prison, a $250,000 fine and a term of supervised release following any prison time.

Garcia-Altamirano could face a maximum of 10 years in prison at sentencing, as well as a $250,000 fine and a term of supervised release following any prison time.

The cases against the men are being investigated by Homeland Security Investigations.
