Summer jobs information session slated for Jan. 31

Teens still interested in applying for a summer job with the city of Goldsboro have another opportunity to attend a mandatory information session on Jan. 31.
Goldsboro's summer employment program is expected to offer nearly 50 part-time jobs to teens in its second year in the city. Applications are currently being accepted through Feb. 9.
One of the requirements for employment is to attend a mandatory orientation meeting. The city held two meetings this month, at Wayne Community College, on Jan. 9 and 11. A lower-than-expected turnout of 94 teens led to the scheduling of a third meeting, said Shycole Simpson-Carter, Goldsboro community relations director.
"Even though attendance was low, we are still confident that the program will have an adequate applicant pool of youth, just by the inquiries we have received," Simpson-Carter said.
The Jan. 31 meeting will be in the Moffatt Auditorium at Wayne Community College, from 6 to 8 p.m. Teens will need to sign in and remain at the meeting during its entirety to receive credit, Simpson-Carter said.
The city plans to offer a minimum of 47 jobs, and another 10 will be offered by the Goldsboro Housing Authority this year, following recent approval by the housing authority board. Each post will pay $7.25 per hour and teens will work about 20 hours per week during a six-week period, either June 11 through July 20 or July 9 through Aug. 18.
Teens also receive soft-skill training and participate in out-of-town trips. The jobs include office work, light labor and recreation support.
In order to qualify, annual net household incomes must be lower than $32,400 for a family of two, $36,450 for a family of three, $40,450 for a family of four, $43,750 for a family of five, $47,000 for a family of six, $50,250 for a family of seven and $53,500 for a family of eight.
The summer youth jobs program is a coordinated effort among the city of Goldsboro, Wayne Community College, N.C. Works Career Center and the Goldsboro Housing Authority.
The city of Goldsboro will pay for 47 of the jobs, at a $45,400 cost, with most being paid for through the city's general fund. The Goldsboro Housing Authority board on Thursday approved spending $10,000 for the 10 jobs as part of the program.
