Wayne County Public Schools to remain closed Monday

Secondary roads and a number of Wayne County Public Schools campuses continue to have issues with lingering ice as temperatures have remained well below freezing since Wednesday's snowfall blanketed much of the area.
As a result, schools will remain closed Monday, Jan. 8.
Temperatures are forecast to climb into the mid 40s by Monday afternoon, bringing a much anticipated end to the record freeze under which much of the East Coast and central states have been held for the past several days.
Here in Wayne County, residents woke up last Thursday morning to anywhere from 1 and a half to 3 and a half inches of snow on the ground. The highest accumulation recorded ---- more than 5 inches ---- came in the southeast corner of the county, near Seven Springs.
Since then, overnight lows in the 10s and early morning wind chills in the single digits have allowed for little to no melt off of the snow and ice, specifically in areas where the midday sun does not reach during this time of year.
Schools were also closed Thursday and Friday, and all weekend activities had to be rescheduled because of the frigid cold and icy conditions.
Wayne Community College will open at 10 a.m. Monday due to hazards remaining from freezing temperatures and icy road conditions.
Classes and activities that would normally take place before 10 a.m. are canceled Monday.
Schedule changes will be posted on the WCC website, at www.waynecc.edu, and on Facebook. Changes will also be communicated through the WayneCC Alert system.
Online and hybrid classes have been available through Moodle, since 8 a.m. on Thursday.
Registration for curriculum classes will remain open until Wednesday, Jan. 10 at noon. Tuition and student fees will be due at the same time. The college's payment plan also will be available to students until Wednesday, Jan. 10 at noon.
