First responders at the scene of a wreck on Durham Lake Road that left one person dead and another injured this morning.
A 74-year-old Dudley man died and another person was injured in a two-vehicle wreck Monday along Durham Lake Road in the Dudley community.
Joe Armstrong Jr., of 169 Cobb Coley Lane, was driving north on Durham Lake Road when his Buick LeSabre was struck in the driver's side door, at 10:57 a.m., by a Ford Focus at the Sandhill Drive intersection, said Trooper David Felton, with the N.C. Highway Patrol.
Betty Gooding, 66, of 268 Paradise Lane, Dudley, who was driving the Ford Focus east on Sandhill Drive, failed to stop at the stop sign and slammed into the Buick.
Armstrong died on impact, Felton said.
Gooding was transported to Wayne UNC Health Care and airlifted to Vidant Medical Center, where she is listed in stable condition.
There were no other passengers in either vehicle, Felton said.
"Judging on the distance and the impact, they weren't speeding," he said. "There is no indication that she stopped at all. It's willfully that she went through that stop sign. She didn't slow down."
The speed limit on Durham Lake Road and Sandhill Drive is 45 mph. Felton said Gooding will likely be charged with failure to stop at a stop sign and misdemeanor death by a motor vehicle.
The charges could be upgraded to felony death by a motor vehicle if State Bureau of Investigation lab tests show a presence of narcotics or alcohol, Felton said. Officers are also considering other factors, including prescribed medications or a medical condition that may have led to the accident.
