Local attorney jailed on contempt of court charge

Local attorney Charles Gurley will find himself on the other side of the defendant's table Wednesday morning.
The prominent local defense attorney who has represented countless Wayne County residents in trials ranging from petty crimes to murder will himself spend the rest of the day in the Wake County Detention Center. The Wayne County Sheriff's Office served a civil contempt order on him at his law office in downtown Goldsboro this morning.
Capt. Ray Brogden of the Wayne County Sheriff's Office said 54-year-old Gurley was picked up from his office on South William Street at about 8:15 a.m. and served with the order. A Wake County Superior Court judge issued the contempt order after Gurley allegedly did not show up to a hearing in Wake County last Thursday.
Brogden said after the order was served, Gurley was taken to the Wake County Detention Center by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office detention transport service.
He will remain in lock up until at least 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, when a Wake County judge will decide his fate for the contempt of court charge, Brogden said.
