The Goldsboro-Wayne Transportation Authority is providing no-cost bus rides this week to veterans and active-duty military personnel.

Free rides are available through Veterans Day -- Nov. 11 -- with the effort recognizing the service and sacrifice of past and present members of the military.

This is the second year GWTA has provided bus rides in honor of veterans and during the week leading up to the national holiday. Ridership has been comparable to the number of people who took advantage of the GWTA effort a year ago, said Fred Fontana, GWTA director.

"We're just looking at it as a way to show our appreciation to the vets and active military and all they do for us," Fontana said.

Close to 300 rides were provided at no cost to veterans and active-duty military in 2016. Without the program, tickets would cost adults $1 per ride or 50 cents for the disabled and people over age 60.

The Veterans Ride Free week requires veterans and active-duty military to provide a military identification or a DD-214 discharge form, with a photo identification, prior to boarding.

GWTA buses operate from 5:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, with purple and blue routes operating until 7:30 p.m. All buses operate from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.
