MOUNT OLIVE -- The Barrow Center for Faith and Life at the University of Mount Olive will present two lectures on the theme of "Loving God with All Our Heart."
The lectures will focus on the importance of inward and outward reflection as a part of a healthy life of faith. Both lectures will take place in the university' Southern Bank Auditorium in Raper Hall at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3.
Dr. Tyanna Yonkers will present a lecture on "Looking Inward."
Yonkers believes that an inward journey involves practices such as prayer, silence, and solitude.
"The inward journey helps us to nurture our relationships with God, others, and ourselves," she said.
Yonkers has been a professor of religion at the University of Mount Olive since 1995.
She earned her doctor of ministry from Baptist Seminary at Richmond in 1999 and her Ph.D. in spirituality from the Catholic University of America in 2014.
Dr. Neal Cox will speak on "Looking Outward."
"According to Jesus Christ our Lord, the church will be known for our love ... to love our neighbors as ourselves, we must invest some of our time in being obedient to follow Jesus outside of the four walls of the church," Cox said.
Cox believes that the inward journey shapes and prepares us to move outward into the world.
He is chair of the religion department at the University of Mount Olive, and he is also senior pastor at Wintergreen Original Free Will Baptist Church.
