A man allegedly used an ax to break into the Eureka Food Mart early Friday morning and then tried to steal an ATM by tying a tow strap around it and driving away.

His attempt was unsuccessful, but the Wayne County Sheriff's Office says he did manage to steal a cash register from inside the store while a woman watched the event unfold.

Thomas Enely Davis, 42, of Sims, is charged with felony possession of a stolen motor vehicle, felony breaking and/or entering, felony conspiracy to commit breaking and/or entering, felony larceny after breaking/entering and felony possession of stolen goods.

Belinda Dale Narron, 35, of Kenly, is charged with felony possession of heroin, felony breaking and/or entering, felony conspiracy breaking and/or entering, felony larceny after breaking/entering and felony possession of stolen goods.

The Sheriff's Office says Davis used an ax to break the front glass door of the store while Narron watched, and then went inside.

Davis then allegedly went inside with a tow strap, stole the cash register, threw it in the back of the truck and then tied the strap around the ATM.

Authorities say he tried to drive away and drag the ATM out of the store behind him, but his plan did not work.

The Sheriff's Office got video footage of what happened. The agency discovered the truck was reported stolen out of Salisbury after employees of the store were able to see the license plate of the vehicle.

A detective then found Davis and Narron inside the truck early Saturday morning while they were parked at the Circle K on North William Street.

They were taken into custody, interviewed and then charged with several felonies each.

Davis is being held in the Wayne County Detention Center under a $25,000 secured bond, while Narron received a $22,000 secured bond.
