It remains too early to predict how close Hurricane Maria will come to North Carolina.

The National Weather Service is telling the public there is no need to get too concerned yet, but to stay aware and not to purge or consume any hurricane kits yet.

As of 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, the official forecast still had the center of Hurricane Maria passing off the North Carolina coast.

However, a closer approach remain possible as it approaches the Southeast coastal water Sunday through Tuesday.

At 2 p.m. Wednesday the center of Hurricane Maria, now a Category 3 storm, was about 15 miles of Arecibo, Puerto Rico. It has maximum sustained  winds of 115 mph and was moving northwest at 12 mph.

This general motion with a gradual decrease in forward speed is expected through early Friday.
