Members of the Daughters of the American Revolution are encouraging Wayne County people to celebrate Constitution Week Sept. 17 through 23.

The tradition of celebrating Constitution Week was started by the DAR in 1955. Members petitioned Congress to set aside the week each year for people to observe the week.

It was adopted by Congress and signed into public law Aug. 2, 1956, by President Dwight E. Eisenhower.

The purpose of Constitution Week is to emphasize everyone's responsibility for protecting, defending and preserving the Constitution for posterity; inform people that the Constitution is the basis for America's heritage and the foundation for the way of life; and encourage the study of the events that led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787.

The David Williams Chapter of the DAR in Goldsboro is asking local churches to ring their bells 13 times for the 13 original colonies at 4 p.m. Sept. 17. Members are also distributing materials to Wayne County Public Schools for study.

"The framers created a Constitution that translated into law the ideals upon which our nation was built," said DAR President General Ann Dillon. "Their vision was so forward thinking that their words still guide us today. No American history education can be complete without a thorough understanding of the impact the Constitution has had on the lives of American citizens past and present."
