Beak Week events to begin tonight

Downtown Goldsboro will come to life with the fourth annual Beak Week Festival planned tonight and Saturday along Center Street.
From 6 to 8 p.m. tonight, a food cluck rodeo will take place at the Cornerstone Commons, near Center and Chestnut streets.
The Band of Oz will perform on stage, food trucks will be set up and the Arts Council of Wayne County will sell beer.
Events continue Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with the Beak Week Festival, which will take up the length of Center Street, from Ash to Spruce, with vendors, a children's area, live music, a barbecue cookoff and wing eating competition.
Beak Week, which has included events throughout the week, is a celebration of Wayne County's poultry industry.
Along the length of Center Street, the Wayne County Cruisers will have a car show and vendor booths will be stationed, with a variety of food, arts, crafts and other items.
The annual Kansas City Barbeque Society cookoff competition will take place throughout the day, with the top award winners being announced at 5 p.m. on the main stage at Chestnut and Center street. More than 40 teams are participating this year, with a variety of prizes planned, including the $5,000 grand champion title.
No public tasting is planned this year for the teams, which will be set up on the vacant lot at Center and Spruce streets.
Wing eating contests will be held at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., at the Cornerstone Commons. Registrations are being accepted online at www.beakweek.org, and there is a $50 entry fee to participate.
Also planned Saturday, is Pig in the Park, a Boys and Girls fundraiser that includes the sale of pork and turkey sandwiches along the 100 block of North Center Street.
The kid's zone will be open in the John Street parking lot, downtown businesses will be open throughout the festival and a beer wagon will be available. The entertainment lineup Saturday includes A Drummer's World, Rollin' Smoke, Blue Notes Jazz Band and the Justin West Band.
