Goldsboro police say a man originally arrested for shooting a gun into the air was then charged with drug offenses after officers found crack cocaine and heroin on him in jail.

James Raye, 30, of 411 Quail Drive, is charged with felony possession of a firearm by a felon, discharging a firearm in the city limits and felony possession of a controlled substance in jail.

A police report said someone called authorities and told them a man had fired several rounds at a car in the 500 block of Banks Avenue.

Maj. Dwayne Dean, head of the Goldsboro Police Department's Operations Bureau, said Raye had actually shot into the air and not struck the vehicle.

"Officers were able to locate the alleged victim of Mr. Raye and there were no bullet holes in the vehicle," Dean said in an e-mail.

The caller was able to give police a description of Raye and the direction he was traveling.

Officers found him on First Church Road and arrested him after police found a firearm on him.

Dean said as Raye was being processed into jail, officers found crack cocaine and heroin on him.

"My guess, it was in a body cavity and found during the jail's thorough search," Dean said.

Raye was given a $106,000 secured bond on the charges.
