A man accused of beating and kidnapping a woman in Day Circle Tuesday night was arrested in Durham early Wednesday morning.

Devon Alexander McCollum, 23, of 310 W. Greene St., Snow Hill, is charged with first-degree kidnapping and assault on a female.

Maj. Anthony Carmon, head of the Goldsboro Police Department's Investigative Services Bureau, said McCollum was arrested in Durham at about 2 a.m. Wednesday.

Outside of injuries the woman sustained in the assault, Carmon said she was with the man when he was arrested and was alive and well.

Carmon could not say for sure if McCollum drove to Durham directly after the incident or made stops along the way.

The Durham Police Department did not return a phone call seeking further details about the arrest.

A police report said the 22-year-old woman and her friend went to go pick the man up when his car broke down.

The suspect then reportedly drove the victim's car to the 200 building in Day Circle and kicked the two women out of the car.

He drove away, but then turned around in a parking lot and came back to where the women were.

The report says he then got out of the car and threw the 22-year-old woman on the ground, kicked her and threw her phone on the ground, breaking it.

He then allegedly picked the woman up off the ground and forced her into the back of her own car, and drove away.

The second woman who was there was able to get away and  report the incident to law enforcement.

McCollum was put in the Durham County Detention Facility under a $500,000 bond for the assault and kidnapping charges. He received an additional $500 bond for marijuana possession.
