Woman throws dog in front of 18-wheeler on Stevens Mill Road

One- to 2-year-old Jack Russel terrier "Rosie" was thrown in front of an 18-wheeler Monday. Rosie was uninjured and now in a safe home.
A woman reported to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office Monday that she saw a Hispanic woman throw a dog in front of an 18-wheeler on Stevens Mill Road Friday afternoon.
But the 18-wheeler did not hit the dog.
And now, the canine is safe and in the care of Helen Scott.
Scott, a local woman who helps rescue animals and lives near where the incident happened, said the woman who rescued the dog brought it to her.
On her Facebook page, Scott often helps connect lost dogs in Wayne County and surrounding counties back to their owners.
"People need to be aware that things like this are happening right here around us," Scott said.
Scott said the woman who witnessed the incident told her she already had dogs and could not keep the one she had rescued from the highway.
So, Scott stepped in and took her into her home.
"She wasn't hurt, except the first day she acted real traumatized," Scott said. "I mean just skittish and unsure, but after that first day, and getting her fed and petting her and rubbing her and loving on her, this dog doesn't leave my feet."
Scott said she planned to take the dog -- an approximately 1 to 2-year-old Jack Russell Terrier who she has taken to calling "Rosie" -- to be checked out at For the Love of Dogs in Wilson.
For the Love of Dogs is a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter.
Scott said she thinks the dog might be pregnant.
If the dog is pregnant, she said she plans to keep the dog until the puppies are born.
If the dog is not pregnant, Scott said several people have expressed an interest in adopting her.
Capt. Shawn Harris with the Sheriff's Office said the incident report filed with the agency would be forwarded to Wayne County Animal Control so they could continue the investigation.
At this time, the woman who reportedly threw the dog into traffic has not been identified and charges have not been filed.
