The Country Skillet, a Southern style restaurant known for its homecooked meals, is closed but may reopen under new management.

Doyle Barnes, business owner, leased the property on Eastgate Drive near the Berkeley Mall to Michael Herring, a local contractor, for three years.

A decision was made in late March to officially close the business, which affected four of the restaurant's original employees, Barnes said.

"I hate it," he said.

Herring was not available to discuss the closing.

Barnes opened the Country Skillet, in 1999, in a free-standing building at 1814 N. Berkeley Blvd. near New Hope Road and managed day-to-day operations until retirement.

The restaurant moved to its current location about six years ago into a suite next to Barnes Jewelers. Barnes owns the jewelry store and has owned the shopping center since 1988, he said.

He remains interested in having the business continue in Goldsboro and is talking with people interested in leasing the space as a restaurant.

"I've already had a couple people look at it to lease it," Barnes said.

A lease sign is posted on the restaurant door with a telephone number, 705-9587.

Barnes plans to consider future options during the next three months.
