A woman allegedly swung a hatchet at another woman and chased her as police officers arrived on scene to a call of a fight in progress early this morning.

According to a Goldsboro Police report, Sarah Michael Benton, 17, of 207 Brazil St., attempted to strike a 22-year-old woman with a hatchet in the 900 block of Fairview Circle at 1:35 a.m.

The report said officers were called to a fight at the same address and saw Benton chase the woman with the hatchet.

Capt. Paige Learnard said Benton eventually climbed on top of a car.

"She was wielding a hatchet and was actually standing on top of a car," Learnard said.

She said officers ordered Benton to get off of the vehicle and drop the weapon.

Benton complied with the officers.

She said the victim reported Benton chased her with the car also, but Learnard said officers found no proof that anyone was driving a car during the fight.

Lernard said medical staff treated the woman for minor injuries on her body. Learnard could not confirm the location of her injuries.

"She was seen by medical staff, but nothing life threatening," Learnard said.

According to the report, no alcohol was consumed by Benton or the woman.

Benton is charged with assault with a deadly weapon, and she was placed in the Wayne County jail under a $700 secured bond.

Sgt. Bryant Canady said Benton is currently in jail.
