Man shoots, kills wife coming home from work early

The Wayne County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a woman early Friday morning after her husband accidentally shot her in the neck, according to a sheriff's office press release.
According to the report, deputies were dispatched to 108 Dee Dee Place at about 12:30 a.m. in reference to what would later be determined to be an accidental shooting.
When they arrived, deputies found 48-year-old Gina Williams lying on the front porch by the door, having suffered a gunshot wound to the neck. Her husband, Billy Williams, was administering first aid.
Mrs. Williams was pronounced dead at the scene.
Through interviews with Williams and his two teenage children, the deputies learned that Mrs. Williams had been working an evening shift at Vidant Medical Center that night, and was not expected home until around 8 a.m.
When she returned early and tried to get in to her home, the noise startled her oldest daughter, who thought someone was trying to break into the house, officials said.
Capt. Richard Lewis said the lock on the front door did not work quite right, and that Mrs. Williams had to shake the key a bit to get the tumblers to function, creating the noise.
The daughter then ran to get Williams, who grabbed his handgun -- a Ruger SR9C -- and went to the front door.
There was no front porch light on at the time, and when Williams opened the door and saw a figure in the dark, he fired a shot which struck his wife in the neck and killed her, according to the release.
No charges have been filed against Williams at this time. The investigation is still ongoing.
