City roads mostly clear after snow, ice over weekend

Subfreezing temperatures left patches of ice on roads but most throughout the city of Goldsboro were clear this morning.
City crews worked throughout the weekend, applying salt to roads, trouble spots and main thoroughfares, said Rick Fletcher, Goldsboro public works interim director.
Shaded areas and some intersections in city neighborhoods continue to have patches of ice, and caution is advised. Fletcher expects more thawing throughout the day.
"There are some spots where there's black ice," Fletcher said early this morning. "The shaded areas are a problem. Everything's passable. I just think you have to use some caution."
A section of Hooks River Road, near the railroad tracks and Salem Church Road, is covered with a 50-foot-long sheet of ice. Fletcher said motorists need to slow down on dry asphalt before approaching icy intersections in city neighborhoods. The intersections, where trees shaded sections of the road, are in different areas of the city.
"Just be careful near the intersections," he said. "There's still some patchy spots."
On Saturday and Sunday, city crews added salt to roads in neighborhoods, downtown streets, thoroughfares, bridges, highway exit and entrance ramps and intersections. Crews will primarily be on standby today, in case there are reports of problem areas.
"They went out yesterday and hit areas that were a problem," he said. "The sun helped us out immensely when it came out.
"I anticipate what's left out there, the sun's going to come out and melt it away, and we'll be done with it."
No major problems were reported over the weekend, and most residents stayed home, he said.
"It was actually pretty quiet," Fletcher said. "There wasn't a lot of traffic out there. Considering what we got, it's a lot drier than what I thought it would be."
Fletcher anticipates some small water-line breaks today following a thawing from overnight temperatures that dropped into the single digits.
