An active shooter exercise will take place at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base Wednesday morning, according to a press release.

The release said the exercise will test the response times for active duty and reserve airmen of the 4th Fighter Wing and 916th Air Refueling Wing.

Increased security will be present at each entry of the base, and roadways will experience congestion during the exercise, the release said.

Tech. Sgt. Phillip Butterfield, with Seymour Johnson, said increased security and road congestion will be the only issues for the community near the base.

He also said no time or duration for the exercise will be announced to the public.

"That's the great thing about exercises like that, that's something we don't publish," he said. "It will be in the morning."

He said the exercise will test procedures and safety for stateside airmen and airmen overseas.

"The purpose of the exercise is to ensure that service members and dependents are ready for any incidents that may happen," he said.
