Winter storm watch to take effect Friday

Full SizeWayne County and the rest of central North Carolina are under a winter storm watch from 7 p.m. Friday through 7 p.m. Saturday. However, the predictions of the storm's duration and possible accumulation amounts continue to evolve.
The National Weather Service Thursday afternoon said snow amounts south and east of Raleigh may need to be lowered if the computer weather model continues trending warmer.
An earlier forecast had 4 to 6 inches in Wayne County, but by Thursday afternoon the amount had fallen to between 2 and 3 inches.
Rain is expected to move into the area after 4 p.m. Friday with rain and sleet are likely before 11 p.m. and then rain, snow and sleet likely between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m. with snow and sleet likely after 1 a.m.
The heaviest precipitation is expected between midnight and noon on Saturday.
Snow is likely, mainly before 1 p.m. Saturday. There is also a slight chance of snow before 1 a.m. Saturday night.
The temperature is expected to drop into the 20s late Friday and struggle to reach freezing on Saturday and Sunday.
Meanwhile NCDOT crews spread close to 22,000 gallons of brine on county roads Wednesday and another 80,000 to 90,000 on Thursday in advance of the storm.
