"He who is slow to anger has great understanding, But he who is quick-tempered exalts folly."
-- Proverbs 14:29
They were young, not married too long when it happened. I don't know if he was playing or if she had done something to make him mad. I am guessing that he was probably mad.
They were sitting at the table, and he picked up a fork and threw it at her, and it hit her in the forehead. I am guessing her feelings were hurt more than the fork hurt. I don't know the details of what happened after that incident, but so far as I know my daddy never hurt my mama again. I can't even imagine my daddy doing such a thing, but she said he did.
I told my husband when we got married that the first time he hit me would be the last. He never hit me, and I am glad.
I am not a fighter myself; I just let people run all over me. I don't see where fighting does anybody any good.
As I think about the fork incident, you know that could have been bad. It could have put out an eye or something. When we do things on the spur of the moment we just don't think, especially if we are young and mad. I think we mellow with age, not as hot-headed as we were.
My parents had been married 58 years when my father passed away. They were a loving happy couple. It would be nice if all marriages could be that way.
God wants us to love each other, not just our families, but our neighbors and all people. He does not want us to be fighting, and that is for sure. After all, He loved us all so much that He gave His only Son to die for us. How great is that?
Next time you get mad, go off somewhere and cool off, do not fight. Love your family and friends (everybody), but most of all love God and His Son Jesus. That is the most important thing you will ever do.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for our parents, thank you for loving Christian parents. Thank you for your love, and again thank you for all you do for us. Amen.
Thought for the day: Don't let anger get the best of you.
Prayer focus: Young married couples
Recipe: M&M cookies
1 cup shortening
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup sugar
2 tsp. vanilla
2 eggs
2 1/4 cups flour
1 tsp. soda
1 tsp. salt
1 1/4 cups M&M candies
Blend shortening and sugar, beat in vanilla and eggs. Sift remaining dry ingredients together and add to sugar mixture, mix well. Stir in 1/2 cup of M&M's, reserve remaining candies for decorating. Drop by teaspoon onto ungreased cookie sheet; decorate tops of cookies with remaining M&M's as desired. Bake at 375 degrees for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.
Yields 6 dozen.
