Wayne Memorial Hospital has been recognized as a high-performing hospital for 2016-17 for treating patients with congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

The ranking by U.S. News & World Report was announced Tuesday by the hospital.

U.S. News assigns a rating to hospitals in a handful of common procedures and conditions, including hip replacement and COPD. Wayne Memorial achieved the highest rating possible in two procedures or conditions

"We are constantly looking for ways to improve the quality of care at our hospital," said Robert Enders, hospital interim president and CEO. "It is rewarding to see those efforts paying off for patients and being recognized by unbiased outside organizations. We will never stop working to provide the best possible care."

"U.S. News evaluates nearly 5,000 hospitals nationwide," said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis at U.S. News. "A hospital that emerged from our analysis as one of the best has much to be proud of."

In rankings by state and metro area, U.S. News recognized hospitals that were high-performing across multiple areas of care.

For 2016-17, 153 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty, while 1,628 received a high-performing rating in one or more specialties, procedures or conditions.

The rankings will be published in the U.S. News "Best Hospitals 2017" guidebook.

The U.S. News analysis of hospitals includes data from nearly 5,000 centers across multiple clinical specialties, procedures and conditions.

Scores are based on a variety of patient outcome and care-related factors, such as patient safety and nurse staffing.

Hospitals are ranked nationally in specialties and regionally in states and major metro areas.

The rankings, now in their 27th year, help guide patients to hospitals that deliver outstanding care across 25 specialties, procedures and conditions, Harder said. The Best Hospitals methodologies include objective measures such as patient survival, the number of times a given procedure is performed, infection rates, adequacy of nurse staffing and more.
