The preliminary results of an autopsy performed on 53-year-old Randy Dee Grady, the victim of a suspected homicide on July 22, did not immediately show what caused his death.
Maj. Tom Effler with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office said the cause of Grady's death remains undetermined and conclusive results from an autopsy as to what caused Grady's death will take two or three months to be returned.
The sheriff's office received the preliminary results of the autopsy in the form of an oral report on Monday, Effler said.
"In this situation they weren't able to find anything that caused the death," Effler said.
Now, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Raleigh, which performed the autopsy, will begin a more extensive examination into what caused Grady's death, Effler said.
There are also no charges pending against anyone in Grady's death so far, nor has anyone officially been named as a suspect.
"At this time, no," Effler said.
According to an incident report filed with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, Grady got into a fight at a residence on Greg Drive and collapsed afterward.
The report says when deputies arrived at the scene, Grady was "not breathing and did not appear to have a pulse." The report also says the responding deputy noticed Grady's belly was exposed and was white, and "blood also appeared to have begun to settle to the lowest portion of his body."
According to the report filed on the incident, Grady and two other people were inside the residence on Greg Drive playing darts.
The report says that Grady became upset during the game of darts and allegedly began arguing with one of the people he was with.
According to the report, the argument became physical and Grady allegedly grabbed the person he was arguing with by the throat and allegedly began hitting the person.
Following this, the report says Grady and the person he was fighting with fell onto the couch, and the person Grady was fighting with then allegedly put Grady in a "choke hold."
According to the report, the person Grady was fighting with allegedly held Grady in a choke hold for one minute before releasing him.
The report goes on to say Grady was released from the choke hold, stood up straight and then fell to the floor.
According to the report, EMS performed CPR on Grady for several minutes before pronouncing him dead.
