Wayne County Public Schools has named individual 2016-2017 Teachers of the Year for its 33 schools.
The announcement came early this year. Traditionally, the district releases the list over the summer, narrowing the field down to finalists for the elementary, middle and high school grades and then holding the annual Teacher of the Year banquet the first week of school.
Officials decided to roll out the proceedings this year before school dismisses, with the districtwide Teacher of the Year to be named at a banquet June 1.
The district's Teacher of the Year program is part of the national program that has been in place for over 50 years.
"Each school's Teacher of the Year represents the best of the teaching profession," said Dr. Yvette Smith Mason, assistant superintendent for human resources. "We congratulate each of them."
