The old Pizza Hut, built in 1977, has been demolished to accommodate for a new building at the same location on East Ash Street.

The Pizza Hut restaurant, at 2518 E. Ash St. near Berkeley Boulevard, was demolished last week in preparation for the construction of a new, modern-style Pizza Hut expected to open in the fall.

Bill Royall, vice president of design-build services for Daniels and Daniels Construction Co., said the future 2,800-square-foot restaurant will have a dining room and offer dining service, carryout and a drive through. The building, which will be smaller than the previous restaurant, will accommodate 63 people, said Allen Anderson, Goldsboro chief building inspector.

A city demolition permit was issued in mid-April and the building permit, allowing construction, was issued May 4, Anderson said. Construction is expected to start within days, Anderson said.

"We anticipate that the new Pizza Hut will reopen in the fall of 2016," Royall said.

The Pizza Hut located at the corner of Glenwood Trail was built in 1977.

An addition to the building led to increased capacity and a total of 3,650 square feet of space, Royall said.

The demolition and new construction is taking place to better compete in the market.

Royall said "food service is a competitive business, and with changes in branding and competition, businesses change to reflect the changes in their market."

Jennifer Collins, Goldsboro assistant planning director, said the site plan shows a newer and more up-to-date building style. Collins also said Pizza Hut restaurants have moved to smaller-scale versions, including the more recent Pizza Hut in the Memorial Commons Shopping Center on Wayne Memorial Drive.

"It's a more modern building," Collins said. "It's going to look completely different."
