Fire Engineer Scott Matthews, right, and Firefighter Davis Hodges, of the Goldsboro Fire Department, check a roof vent Monday while working an apartment fire at 707A N. Claiborne St. No one was injured in the fire.

A fire at 707 A N. Claiborne St. Monday morning destroyed a woman's kitchen and caused severe smoke damage to the rest of her home.

Goldsboro Fire Department Assistant Chief James Farfour said the fire began on the stove in the kitchen before spreading.

"It expanded up into the hood above the stove and then went into the attic," Farfour said.

The resident of the apartment, Angela Loyd, was not home when the fire started and nobody was injured because of the fire.

No other apartments in the area were damaged.

Firefighters also cut the apartment's heat vent away from the roof of the structure to prevent further damage.

"Firefighters were able to get to the attic quickly and extinguish the fire," Farfour said.

"The heat vent was getting hot at the top, and it is connected to the roof, so they had to cut that away."

The fire began just after 11:15 a.m. Monday and was extinguished around noon.

Goldsboro Fire Department Engines 1, 2, 4 and 5, and Ladder 1 responded to the fire.
