A Charles B. Aycock High School student was charged Thursday with having a firearm on campus.
Goliath Wendell, 18, was charged with possession of a firearm on school property, and with assault, said Wayne County Sheriff Larry Pierce.
Pierce said officers were called to break up a fight in the front lobby of the school and later discovered a pistol in Wendell's car. Pierce emphasized that at no time was Wendell in personal possession of the weapon.
A second student also was charged with assault.
The school was not placed on lockdown because the incident did not warrant the measure, Wayne County Public School officials said, but following the incident that involved three students the side doors to the school were locked in order to direct all visitors to the main entrance.
While no threats were made against the school, extra law enforcement presence was on the Aycock campus on Friday as a precaution, as there were still ongoing issues between the students involved in Thursday's altercation, school officials said.
The school administration did make an announcement over the intercom system to inform students about the extra deputies on campus.
