Relay for Life for Wayne County kicks off today, with activities planned throughout the evening into Saturday at the Wayne County fairgrounds.
The annual fundraiser for cancer research has been a staple in the community since 1990.
Churches and other teams have set up booths for the occasion, selling food, T-shirts and other items to raise money for the cause. Music and entertainment are also plentiful.
Gates open to the public today at 2 p.m., with the opening ceremony planned for 6 p.m.
Among the highlights are the survivors lap around the track at 6:30 p.m., a caregivers lap at 6:45 and the lighting of the "flame of hope" at 6:55.
A luminaria ceremony, honoring those who have lost the cancer battle or are still engaged in the fight, will take place at 9 p.m.
Theme laps will be held every hour, with children's activities also featured this year throughout the event. The final lap, the kids lap, will take place at 9 a.m. Saturday.
All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society. Relay for Life is the largest fundraising effort of the ACS, supporting cancer research and providing funding to improve the quality of life for cancer patients and caregivers.
Closing ceremonies will be held Saturday at 10 a.m.
