Gardening and food preservation school to be held beginning in April

A Grow to Can gardening and food preservation school will be held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays from April 7 through May 12 at the Wayne County Cooperative Extension Office, 208 W. Chestnut St.

To register for workshop contact the Wayne County Extension Office at 919-731-1520 or go by the office.

The registration fee can be paid at the Wayne County Extension Office, and checks should be made out to County of Wayne.

For accommodations for persons with disabilities, call 919-731-1520 no later than 5 business days before the event.

The school, being put on by Wayne County Cooperative Extension, offers hands-on workshops that will teach the basics on how to create a garden and safely preserve the items grown. This is a series of classes in which you can sign up for one or all of them. Attendees who register for the entire school (all six sessions) will receive a booklet with instructional materials and certificate.

The class schedule is:

* Basics of gardening, April 7.

* Basics of food preservation, April 14.

* Growing backyard fruits, April 21.

* Preserving fruit products, April 28.

* Home vegetable garden, May 5.

* Preserving vegetable products, May 12.

The cost is $50 for all six sessions( including booklet and certificate); $30 for three gardening school (three sessions; April 7, 21 and May 5); $30 for the food preservation school (three sessions; April 14, 28 and May 12); and $10 per individual class.

Participants will need to sign up for the basic classes (session 1 and/or 2) along with any of the other classes.

The school is limited to a maximum of 12 participants who must pay to reserve a spot. Once school is full, a waiting list will be kept for future schools. The workshop will be presented by Michelle Estrada, Wayne County family and consumer science agent, and Jessica Strickland, Wayne County horticulture agent.
