A Goldsboro man is dead after suffering multiple gunshot wounds while in the 400 block of Seymour Drive Tuesday afternoon.
While several male subjects are currently being interviewed by the Goldsboro Police Department as to their involvement, the case is presently being listed as a death investigation rather than a homicide.
Quentin Lamont Kenon, 28, 209 Neil St., died at Wayne Memorial Hospital after being shot several times at 4:32 p.m. outside a residence at 448 Seymour Drive, according to the police report.
Witnesses said they heard, but did not see the shooting take place. No one knew exactly how many shots had been fired or who fired the first shot.
One witness, a neighbor who asked not to be identified by name, said he heard more than one shot.
"It was a couple. I wasn't counting," he said.
He said was inside his residence at the time, but he came outside just moments after the shooting stopped. He found Kenon, bleeding heavily from his right side or upper torso, and pressed a towel against his body to try to help stop the bleeding.
"Wherever I saw blood, that's where I put it," he said. "He was in a lot of pain."
Witnesses said police responded within minutes, followed almost immediately by the fire department. It seemed to take the ambulance a while longer to get there, they said.
While all of this transpired, an armed man whose name has not yet been released by police, turned himself in at the Wayne County Magistrate's Office and told authorities there he had just shot somebody after being shot at.
"That rumor is not entirely untrue," Maj. Anthony Carmon said.
Carmon conceded that one "theory" being investigated is that the victim shot first and was only shot in retaliation which, if the theory holds up, could equate to self defense.
"We are investigating that theory," Carmon said.
But he also said nothing was being ruled out. More than one interview is being conducted with more than one person.
"We have ID'd some people, but we are not making that public yet," Carmon said.
Two weapons have been taken into evidence, but it is too early to say if they have the second weapon recovered killed Kenon.
"A weapon was found with the deceased. Another handgun was recovered," Carmon said. "(We) can't say if it is the weapon that was used in Kenon's death."
