UMO alumni weekend April 1-3

MOUNT OLIVE -- The University of Mount Olive is preparing for its 2016 Spring Alumni Weekend that will be held Friday through Sunday, April 1-3, at various locations on campus.

There will be a multitude of activities for alumni to enjoy while they reconnect with old friends and relive their years at the university.

The weekend will kick off with registration at 11 a.m. at the Waylin Center, Bay 547, on Michael Martin Road.

Registration will be open through 5 p.m.

At noon, the alumni golf tournament and golf team reunion will take place at Walnut Creek Country Club, Goldsboro.

A welcome reception will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Hennessee Room.

A reunion of religion department alumni will be held at 5 p.m. in the Deacon Jones Student Lounge featuring coffee and a theology discussion.

A "Hansel and Gretel" performance will take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Hazel Waters Kornegay Assembly Hall, 207 Wooten St. A performance will also take place at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

On Saturday, April 2, registration will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Hunt Presidential Meeting Room. There will be an alumni annual meeting at 11 a.m. in the Hennessee Room.

An awards and reunion luncheon will be held at 11:30 a.m. in the Holmes and Lois K. Murphy Center to celebrate the 50th and 25th class reunions and to present awards to outstanding alumni.

Receiving awards this year will be Carolyn Fader Hill of Raleigh from the Class of 1964; Jean Fillengame Ackiss of Goldsboro from the Class of 1960; Charlotte Fields Watson of Goldsboro from the Class of 1996; and John and Deanna Ryan of Mount Olive from the Classes of 2015 and 2011, respectively.

Former members of the Mount Olive Singers will gather at 1 p.m. to visit with Irene Patten to relive their days of choir music and church dinners.

At 2 p.m., there will be a Class of 1986 reunion in the Archives Room to celebrate its 30th class reunion.

From 3 to 5 p.m., there will be campus tours for alumni to see the new additions to the campus, including the new Station Street Apartments. The tour will start at the Holmes and Lois K. Murphy Center.

From 3 to 5 p.m., there will be an agriculture reunion dinner in the Goodson and Wells Building for alumni of the agriculture department to return for food and fellowship with classmates and professors.

Then at 5 p.m., there will be a Tillman School of Business Reunion Dinner at Ribeyes of Mount Olive.

There will also be a host of athletic competitions for alumni to watch.

Two men's volleyball games will take place throughout the weekend. The first will be held on Friday at 7 p.m. in Kornegay Arena when the Trojans will take on North Greenville University.

Also at 2 p.m. on Saturday, the men's volleyball team will face Emmanuel College. There will also be a men's lacrosse match at 1 p.m. on Saturday against Belmont Abbey College at Amon Field.

There will be two alumni soccer games on Saturday as well. The women's alumni game will be held at the women's practice field at 3 p.m. and the men's alumni game will be held on the practice field at 5 p.m.

Alumni from the soccer programs are encouraged to return to UMO and play another game.

All alumni are invited to continue their reunions with fellow classmates over dinner at local Mount Olive restaurants. El Mazatlan, Ninos and Ribeyes are offering 10 percent discounts to alumni attending the weekend events.
