The Wayne County Sheriff's Office is investigating the first county homicide of 2016 following a double shooting inside a Dudley home late Saturday night.

One victim died at the scene and the other was transported to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville with serious injuries.

Carlos Cesar Vasquez Luna, 47, 159 Sleepy Creek Road, died as a result of his injuries after a report of shots fired inside his home sent several Wayne County deputies to the residence.

"We had a report of two people killed in the area, we found one dead. Right now we are in the preliminary investigation," Maj. Tom Effler said.

Responding deputies said that a woman called 911 and stated, "they killed" two men and to come on and the line went dead.

The second victim, Alfred Garcias, 25, survived the shooting, but was transferred to Greenville for treatment.

"We were told yesterday he was in intensive care. He remains in critical condition," Capt. Richard Lewis said.

"We have got some leads we are working, but we are still investigating," he added.

At least four people occupied the home the two men were shot in, including the victims, Wayne County Sheriff Larry Pierce said. The owner of the residence did not actually live there and it was proving difficult to determine who paid rent and who was just coming and going, Pierce said.

"The deceased and the other victim both lived here," he said.

A translator was called in due to the language barrier, and detectives went house to house asking the neighbors what they might have seen. It was not clear Saturday night whether the shooting was the result of a domestic dispute, an attempted home invasion or some other circumstance.

Pierce said a motive had not yet been determined.

The investigation is ongoing.
