A Goldsboro man will serve 10 years in federal prison and an additional three years of supervised release following a plea agreement reached in federal court Monday.
Shawntanna Lemarus Thompson, 27, also known as Key Ross, pleaded guilty Monday to intent to distribute a quantity of marijuana and to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Federal prosecutors adopted Thompson's case back in February of this year following multiple arrests in Goldsboro on gun and drug charges.
The federal conviction is part of a plea agreement that saw a four-count indictment reduced to the two counts for which Thompson is now sentenced.
Of those thrown out, a count charging Thompson with possessing firearms in furtherance of drug trafficking could have added another 10 years to his sentence.
U.S. Department of Justice public information officer Don Connelly declined to go into detail about the plea agreement.
"It's just part of the process of plea negotiations. That is not public information," Connelly added.
Although the federal prison system has done away with parole, Thompson could still be a candidate for early release.
"You can get good behavior. So I believe 85 percent is the minimum (he) could serve, if he behaves himself every day in there," Connelly said.
