A Mount Olive man is in custody today after being charged Friday with trafficking cocaine, according to a press release issued by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.

Demetrius Deshaun Cogdell, 30, of 311 W. Kornagay St., is charged with two counts of trafficking cocaine and a single count of felony maintaining a vehicle for the sale or use of a controlled substance.

According to the press release, members of the sheriff's office Aggressive Criminal Enforcement (ACE) Team conducted a traffic stop during which a vehicle search took place. An undisclosed amount of cocaine was discovered.

"It had to be more than 28 grams because they charged him with trafficking, Maj. Tom Effler said.

Cogdell was placed in the Wayne County Detention Center under a $51,000 secured bond.

In a separate incident Saturday, as the ACE Team conducted a checkpoint on a roadway in the northern end of the county, a driver tried to avoid being stopped by making a quick U-turn. Deputies quickly pursued the vehicle and witnessed the driver pitching evidence out of the window. The evidence was collected as the deputies went along and the driver eventually stopped.

Stephen Ron'Shea Jones III, 30, of 135 Sunny Drive, Pikeville, is charged with felony fleeing to elude, possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Jones was placed in the Wayne County Detention Center under a $10,000 secured bond. Officials with the Office of the Wayne County Clerk of Courts said Jones also had an existing bond of $25,000 for possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine.

Jones was able to post bond and is free pending his first appearance in Wayne County District Court later today.
